Rollin' on 32's.

Well, folks, I'm officially a Cambus driver.  I'll be driving Blue 2B this Tuesday.  If you need to ride counter-clockwise around campus I'm your man.

Retrospectapalooza

This year's Lollapalooza review brought to you by Robby:

  • Holy Fuck has a lot of cool toys.  I would really like to play with all of their toys.
  • It was way too hot to pay attention to Rogue Wave
  • The Black Keys made me make that pursed lips "Oh, yeah, I got the blues" face a lot.  That guy has one meaty-ass collection of amps.  It allows him to actually play basslines in his guitar riffs, which is extremely sexy.
  • The Raconteurs were, sadly, right before Radiohead on the opposite side of the park.  But I do know that the first half of their set totally rocked.
  • Radiohead + fireworks= euphoria
  • Devotchka were really fun to watch.  They are a very multifaceted group of individuals.  The singer drank at least half a bottle of wine on stage and later used the bottle as an oversized guitar slide.  I'm totally going to do that some day.
  • The Jamie Lidell show was way better than I thought it would be.  And I thought it would kick ass.  He also has some really cool toys that I'd like to play with.  TONS of vocal filters and modulators, loopers and samplers.  And that guy's got some serious pipes.  And apparently he dresses to the right.
  • The levels at Rage Against the Machine were, unfortunately, awful.  Tom Morello, the only guy in the band I really wanted to hear, was the quietest one.  Total buzzkill.  And people kept getting hurt, causing big pauses in the show.  Kind of a letdown, really.
  • Don't go out of your way to see Chromeo.  If they're not really, really close and tickets aren't really, really cheap you'd be better off just listening to Chromeo really loudly in the air conditioning.  Grab a couple cymbals.  Sing along.  If you can do that, you could probably be in Chromeo.  At this show I saw the most pathetic joint rolling session I have ever seen.  These people in front of me... I kind of wanted to step in and say, "You guys.  This is not how you roll a joint.  Just let me do it for you, it's too painful to watch.  And next time get some rolling paper.  NOT just... paper.
Overall, a very good three days.  Day three was mostly Tylerpalooza, which was also quite enjoyable.

OK, get this.  I've got this crazy idea.  I'm going to sell my Basson cab, get a 2x12 version of it, and run a Bassman through it.  Ok, I'm not done.  Then I'm going to get a 2x12 JCM 900 cab and run my Marshall through that.  THEN I'm going to get a channel switcher so I can combine the Bassman and the Marshall because that will sound totally badass wicked awesome.  Just think about what I could do with an octave effect on the bassman while thrashing on the Marshall.  God, that gets me goin'.  Can anyone say "pan effect with a DD20"?  This amp setup is my newest fantasy.
